NARS Audacious Lipstick Collection Featuring Charlotte Rampling

NARS has sparked much debate by appointing the 69 year old actress Charlotte Rampling as their new face. While the news that a make up brand has chosen an older woman to represent them has been generally well received there has been concern that if they heavily airbrush the images of Rampling it will defeat the point of using her in the first place

The first Charlotte Rampling for NARS image has now been released and it does appear that she's had a digital touch up or two. Also, the image is in black and white which is more forgiving (and arty) than colour. However, I think it's a great picture and I don't think showing every pore and wrinkle is what women want to see in a make up advert. Don't we all know by now that beauty ads are supposed to be inspirational and aspirational and contain some artifice to make them that way.

When it come to selling skincare it is deceptive if the face that a brand uses has had all her imperfections erased as the implication is that 'if you buy this cream you too can have skin like this'. But when it comes to lipstick it doesn't bother me if the ad is a stylish image that isn't entirely rooted in reality. However, I'm sure there are many that would disagree with me about that.

A word on the lipstick. They are being launched to coincide with NARS 20th Anniversary and will include 40 shades. They all have girls names that seem to be inspired by famous women. The US launch date is being touted as September and the UK should get them in October. For more images head over to Chic Profile.
