AOX Lip Complex By Skinceuticals - A Genuine Step Forward In Lip Care
Hot on the heels of the Skinceuticals AOX+ Eye Gel (read Caroline Hiron's rave review of it HERE) comes the AOX Lip Complex. The eyes and lips are the areas we focus on when we look at someone's face but, unfortunately, they're also the features that age the fastest. While there's loads of great serums and creams to help combat ageing around the eyes, there's surprisingly little available for the lips so the new AOX Lip Complex is a very welcome launch.
Here are the reasons lips need extra care and consideration:
1. They have no sebaceous glands.
2. They have no melanin.
3. The edges of the lip (vermilion boarders) lose their outline with age.
4. They have a thinner stratum corneum compared to the rest of the face. Lips have only 3-5 cellular layers.
While lip balms can protect lips to a certain extent a lot of people are actually allergic to the ingredients in them. This makes lips dry and flaky so more lip balm is applied and it all becomes a vicious circle. The AOX Lip Complex contains ingredients that hydrate and heal the lips in a way that breaks that vicious cycle (it only needs to be used once or twice a day) and it also includes absorbable actives that repair and prevent damage.
The active ingredients are:
Pure Vitamin E - a powerful antioxidant.
Silymarin (extract of milk thistle) - a powerful antioxidant.
Hyaluronic Acid - a natural humectant.
Hydroxyethyl Urea - improves skin's elasticity and increases hydration levels
Glycerin - a humectant to help maintain the water balance at a cellular level, attracts water to the skin's surface internally and externally and nourishes the lips.
Allantoin - a botanical anti-irritant known for its healing and soothing properties.
Skinceuticals divide their products up into three catorgories - Prevent, Protect, and Correct - and AOX Lip Complex has been put into the later group. However, I'd say if you used it regularly it would also protect the lips and prevent problems from occurring in the first place. It's becoming increasingly accepted that antioxidants help prevent UV damage so using AOX Lip Complex in the morning before applying an SPF lip product will go a long way to ensuring your lips keep their shape and remain hydrated. I'd also say this product would be particularly beneficial to smokers. It's even recommended for use before and after dermal lip fillers to help prime lips and relieve after-effects.
The product itself is a light lotion that comes in a pump dispenser and is odourless and tasteless. It absorbs quickly but a slight moisturising layer remains on the lip surface. I don't think it will be long before using products like the AOX Lip Complex will be as commonplace as using an eye cream and rightly so.
The Skinceuticals AOX Lip Complex is £35 for 10ml and available from Omniya health and beauty clinic in Knightsbridge as well other authorised sellers of Skinceuticals which you can find HERE.
